Horns Pound Tech 42-7

NROTC 2001 Reunion Weekend-29 September

Despite the shocking events of September 11, a sizable crowd gathered to hear sea stories and watch the Horns escape from a tenacious Texas Tech.

Golf-Due to insufficient participation, the golf outing was cancelled.  Hopefully next year we will gather and play at a local course.  Bob Thomas says he can kick the behind of any sailor golfer.

Parties-There was a great crowd Friday evening at Austin Country Club, and some somewhat lengthy sea stories.  The Scholz's crowd was small this year but we upheld our traditions of bad behavior and over indulgence.  Even Holbach showed up this time.

Business meeting-PNS Gene Garrett and the current Midshipman Battalion Commander brought us up to date on Unit Activities. Four Scholarships were presented to midshipmen by Foundation Trustees Weldon Koenig and Max Miller. Board Members, Officers, Regional Directors, Classgroup chairmen, Past Presidents and Battalion Commanders were recognized. We were pleased to have NROTC alum John Montford, immediate Past Chancellor of Texas Tech University present. Also recognized were a number of World War II veterans.  New Board members elected were Deborah O'Neil (our first Board member who was an Anchorette), David Wells, Dennis Olson and Walt Jenkins. Max Miller was elected as Trustee of the UT Midshipman Foundation. Officers continuing to serve are Rod Koenig (President), Bob Gartner (Treasurer) and Gary Schoen (Secretary).   John Allman, Jr. was elected as Vice President to replace Clay Fulcher, who resigned.

NROTC Alumnus of the Year was Bill Docekal.  Bill has served as Editor of our Newsletter and has been a past President.

The 2002 Reunion will be on October 5, 2002, the Oklahoma State Game.  Emphasis will be on the Classes 0f 52, 62, 72, 82, and 92, all have 10 year or greater reunions next year.  Mark your calendars now for October 5, 2002.

Dinner- After the business meeting, we adjourned to the loading dock behind the ROTC building for great Barbeque, Beck's and Shiner brews and related refreshments, and great conversation. The game was at 6:00pm with outstanding weather and a score of 42-7 in favor of Texas.   Bob Gartner took lots of great photos despite the quality of the subjects.  Click on the 2001 Photo link.  There wasn't enough beer to allow us to be our usual rowdy selves.  Maybe next year.

Sunday morning- Some of us made breakfast at Cisco's on Sunday morning. We heard great stories of early classes in the 1940's, including a great story of a buried 1937 Packard and a buried bra. Stand by for more of those stories in the future.
