ROM RHOME died in Houston on April 22, 2008.  Rom was a member of the NROTC Unit at the University of Texas, where he was the Unit’s first Battalion Commander. Upon graduation from the University in 1943, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. He served during both World War II on the heavy cruiser U.S.S. San Francisco and the Korean War attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  He received his MBA with honors from Harvard Business School.  He was known for service in the public interest at both national and community levels, having membership in the Rotary Club of NW Houston and as a board member of NARAL.  Rom was a member of the College of Natural Sciences Hall of Honor and past chairman of its Foundation Advisory Council at the University of Texas.  He was recently Past President of the University of Texas Foundation (2006-07).  He will be remembered for his named endowments at the University of Texas.

 

Rom was preceded in death on January 1, 2003, by his beloved wife Margaret, affectionately known as Peg   He is survived by his three step-children, Peter W. McGehee, Anne Manka and Jane McGehee; cousin Rom Park Welborn; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many other family and friends. A Memorial Service was held May 5, 2008 at John Wesley United Methodist Church in Houston.
